The Carmignani Family and the Lavagna Residence History
The Carmignani family originated from an ancestor who in 1397 frequented
Montecarlo for small business and managed to obtain a position as "municipal
messenger", an impartial employee who soon obtained the nickname
"Carmignana", or "Carmignuola". From his great-grandsons Lorenzo and
Bartolomeo we have the two main branches of the family witnessed in the
15th century, called "Lornezi" and "Carmignani".
These two surnames distinguished two different families and the Carmignani descendants were
gathered under various names "Mori", "di Pelo", "Basetti", "di Pizzo",
"Cascinieri", "Fuso". A branch lived in Turchetto and made a fortune
managing the pig market. We have a member who became "lieutenant" of the
Bande in Pierfrancesco di Simone, born in 1616.
There were several marriages
with brides of important economic level such as: Martini di Monsummano in
1683, Mazzoni di Capannori in 1717, Vecchi di S. Gimignano in 1759 At the
beginning of 1700 the family was counted among the richest in Montecarlo,
and resided in the palace on the "via della Porta Vecchia", and had also built
a small church by Turchetto in 1722. We have a family document, a will on
the occasion of Simone's death 1781 which lists a series of landed properties,
in addition to the palace worthily enriched with furniture, mirrors, weapons,
books and jewels. Inside there was also a copy of the famous fresco found in
the church of S. Andrea della "Madonna del Soccorso".
In 1838, the death of
Angelo di Simone Carmignani, Auditore di Rota, Knight and Chancellor of
the Order of Saint Stephen, gave rise to another extraordinarily rich and
detailed inventory of the palace, in which, due to the choice of themes and
authors, the library, which includes Metastasio, Tasso, Pignotti, Muratori,
Sannazaro, Chiabrera, Ximenes, Moreni, Chateaubriand, Filangieri, Ovidio,
Fagiuoli. The knight Angelo had appointed the young Francesco di Antonio
Macarini, a nobleman from Lucca, as heir of the assets, the surname and the
coat of arms, who however died before his father in 1852: the latter, the
son's heir, claimed and obtained the Carmignani assets and the privileges in
1854, thus giving rise to the Macarini Carmignani family, from which
possession of the palace later passed to other families, including the
Lavagnas.
